interviews: Anatomia (JP)

During one of my visits at a concert I tried ripping off a bunch of CDs from good old Daniel of Revenge Productions. When he was watching my activities as a thief (man, that guy was watching me like a hawk :-) he told me I should definitely snatch ANATOMIA's new album, I'd like it. When I got home I put "Dissected Humanity" into my player and immediately a big fat smile showed on my face. The stuff Takahashi Tanaka, Yoshio Hasegawa (both ex-TRANSGRESSOR) and Jun Tonosaki are presenting us is an absolute AUTOPSY tribute! That rules! Aside from AUTOPSY there are also influences by IMPETIGO, old DEATH, GRAVE, DISEMBOWLMENT (concerning the doom-parts) and ROTTREVORE. Takashi (vokills/drums) answered my questions!

Necromaniac:

Takashi, you have been messing around in the death metal scene ever since 1989 at least or maybe even longer but nevertheless the first TRANSGRESSOR-demo is from that time. Well, I have to admit, you're still looking good! The newest ANATOMIA photos show a guy looking not any older than 25! Okay, little joke to start with!

Anatomia (JP):

Ha ha ha! we don't get old and our lives eternal!!! No...unfortunately we all turned 35 this year! That sucks we are getting old though Japanese often look younger... I often get caught while I was staying in the U.S. when I was buying a case of beer and some bottles of Jagermeister!!!! Ha ha ha! Anyways, thanx so much for this killer interview! I'm glad to have more friends in Germany and I'm hoping more and more German death metal heads will get to know us through this interview!!

Necromaniac:

With TRANSGRESSOR you released only one album in 1992. In 1999 there was another split with IMPETIGO, but that was it. When did you start off with ANATOMIA? In Yoshio you found another comrade-in-arms who formerly also played in TRANSGRESSOR. How and when did you get the idea to start ANATOMIA?

Anatomia (JP):

Well we simiply changed the name from TRANSGRESSOR to ANATOMIA. We started to think about the name TRANSGRESSOR was not meaningful anymore as the line-up was never stable so as to the music style. And that was around the beginning of 2002 when we were trying to have some new songs but it took us forever and unsuccessfully incomplete. So we wanted to start up everything new from scratch and that was the start of ANATOMIA.

Necromaniac:

Honestly, I didn't like your demo of 2003 all that much, I started being a fan of your music with your album "Dissected Humanity" Looking back, what do you think about your demo nowadays?

Anatomia (JP):

We in deed liked that demo but not as much as the "Dissected Humanity" album. That demo was just created as an item to spread our name and music over the scene. Also for ourselves to learn our own songs!! ha ha ha! Actually that demo was supporsed to be recorded again because Yoshio misoperated his recording kit and failed to save the finished data at the end so we finished it up with using the rough mixed tracks instead.

Necromaniac:

Due to the fact that you have been active within the metal scene for such a long time and that people know you from TRANSGRESSOR, I guess you got in touch with Roy of Necroharmonic pretty quickly, cause he had known you for years, am I right? What did he promise you guys to make you sign with him? No question about it, this is the perfect label for a band like yours!

Anatomia (JP):

No special promise at all! Maybe promised to stay doom!! ha ha ha! I just send him our demo and he liked it so we started talking about our full length CD! We both agreed that ANATOMIA fits perfect in his label Necroharmonic. It was awesome to have an album released by my old friend since 15 years ago.

Necromaniac:

I am a fanatic AUTOPSY-fan and every time I get to hear bands paying tribute to Chris & Co. I can hardly avoid getting a hard-on! No matter if it's MAUSOLEUM, MURDER SQUAD or recently DEATHBREATH. By the way, how do you like DEATHBREATH's album? There are different opinions about it. What I'm trying to say "I have a couple of buddies who really are AUTOPSY maniacs and when I bought your album and played it to them, each one of them had a big smile on his ugly face! Well, I'm just saying that you really hit the core! Yeah, I know, aside from AUTOPSY there also are IMPETIGO, DEATH, NECROPHAGIA, and old GRAVE parts, but AUTOPSY definitely dominate! You have made a couple of losers very happy over here in Germany! So, if you ever wanna play live in my backyard, please let me know (haha)! And it would be great if you would bring along COFFINS as well!

Anatomia (JP):

Yeah we are also big fans of AUTOPSY! We grew up through all the early '90s death metal in general. Yeah that would be awesome to play shows in Germany! We always wanting to play outside of Japan especially in Germany I think has got some really great death/grind, metal scene! It would be great to hang out with you guys with tons of beer and foods and playing live in your home/backyard would totally kill!!! We'll do that whenever we come and make sure to bring COFFINS too!! Well, I just heard DEATHBREATH recently on Myspace site and I liked them a lot! They got some twisted and unique elements in the pure death metal base. Oh that's really great to hear that we're making some underground maniacs in Germany smile and happy! That's what we wanted to hear and we are always intended to do!!! We are maniacs also!!

Necromaniac:

You play the drums and sing at the same time, just like Chris Reifert! For me that was always a fascinating thing about AUTOPSY, Chris doing the drumming and the vocals. I could imagine that is pretty difficult, isn't it? Does Yoshio do some of the vocal parts as well?

Anatomia (JP):

Yeah playing the drums and vocals are insane but I like that way!! Like I'm tormented and gasping for air!!! Sometimes I lose the tempo and have some mistakes but I just fuck them!!!! Yeah Yoshio and Jun both have vocal parts too but not as much as I do.

Necromaniac:

I think your version of "Stillborn" came out very good. By the way, does Chris Reifert know your album, have you or Roy (Necroharmonic) sent it to him?

Anatomia (JP):

I think so. I haven't talked with Chris about that yet but I'm sure he already owns one because he's also a big fan of TRANSGRESSOR and ANATOMIA!!! ha ha ha!! I'm getting in touch with Chris since TRANSGRESSOR days but I haven't send him any copy of ANATOMIA album yet... That "Stillborn" is an old demo version, not the one on the Peacevile compilation which was recorded later.

Necromaniac:

I keep talking about AUTOPSY and you're probably thinking Why doesn't he hear the other influences in our music? So, if I'm wrong or if you wanna add something, go right ahead!

Anatomia (JP):

As I said earlier we all grew up through the early '90s death metal scene so the bands like DEATH, MASSACRE, PARADISE LOST, OBITUARY, GRAVE, ENTOMBED, CATHEDRAL, MACABRE, MY DYING BRIDE, and more underground bands like DERKETA, PHANTASM, FUNEBRE, DEMIGOD, EVOKEN, etc. and we can't list them all! So we mainly like death metal with some doom influences.

Necromaniac:

Hey, do you work for Kawasaki promotion department? Or are you just a big motorcycle fan? On your homepage I saw that you totally get into the Kawasaki ZZR-1100! Do you have one? You guys live in the middle of Tokyo, don't you? So, can you even run the gears to the limit at all? I guess you can only speed your bike on the highway (haha)?

Anatomia (JP):

Right I own this motorcycle "Kawasaki ZZR-1100" and I really like this bike! Motorcycle is one of my hobbies and I often go out for touring and enjoy cruizing in high speed!! Japan has really narrow road ways so I can't go that fast except in highways but still not go like Autobahn though... that bike is killer!! as you know it runs really fast!! No, I don't work for Kawasaki!!

Necromaniac:

In the meantime, there are lots of cool new bands dedicated to old death metal coming from Japan, especially from Tokyo. COFFINS and GALLHAMMER, but also DETRITUM are very promising acts. I guess you also like these bands, don't you? What's it like over there, do you meet on the weekends every once in a while to have some beer and sake? Or is Tokyo too big to have parties like that? I only know Tokyo from the TV, so please tell me something about it.

Anatomia (JP):

Well, I see the living in Tokyo is not friendly like that unfortunately. People here basically busy or look busy and mostly having closed mind. Of course those bands you mentioned are good friends but we hang out when we meet at our shows and often go out for drinking after the show. BUTCHER ABC/OBLITERATION guys live near so we hang out more often with them. I agree that there are many more great bands here and a lots of cool live shows going here! Generally life in Tokyo is like working on weekdays at least 8 hours a day and basically not many things are happening but on the weekends for a lots of fun. And a lots of traffic jams and packed trains, you know...

Necromaniac:

I think your cover artwork is very obscure and somehow fits to your lyrics, even though the cover is not as much gore as the lyrics are. But that macabre atmosphere really fits! Some guy called Eiichi Ito was responsibly for the artwork, would you call me a philistine cause I don't know him?

Anatomia (JP):

Eiichi is one of our old friends since TRANSGRESSOR days. He often came out to the TRANSGRESSOR shows and we got to know each other since we found he lived near and hanged out. After some years silence we saw his artworks and we decided to asked him for the "Recollected Limbs" cover and then the "Dissected Humanity" cover. His artworks are really unique with using pencil only. That way really fits in this underground and old school way, doesn't it??

Necromaniac:

Yoshio (guitar) has recorded and produced your album. Is this a home recording or does he produce other bands as well?

Anatomia (JP):

No, Yoshio doesn't do it as his job. Its just a home recording! Yoshio has never recorded any other band stuffs.

Necromaniac:

Okay Takashi, that's it from my side for now! I hope you had some fun with my question. In case I forgot something, please tell me and my readers! Get going with new material! Johan (SCURVY) told me that there will be a split-EP with you guys! Is that ripe for decision yet? I really like SCURVY and I think you guys would fit pretty cool concerning your music! I am glad SCURVY are back! Okay man, greetings to Tokyo!

Anatomia (JP):

Thanx again for this cool interview! These questions are a lots of fun and I really enjoyed them!! Yeah we are planning to have a split with SCURVY sometimes in 2007!! Before that, we will have a 3 way split CD with COFFINS and GRUDGE for which we just finished recording except vocals, and also we'll have another split with an Australian gore grind BOWEL FETUS!! So things are going pretty good here and working really hard for our new stuffs!! I hope you all Necromaniac will enjoy this interview and get to know us, support the Japanese underground scene!
